The Ford Escape made its official debut as a 2001 model year. While most similar vehicles were truck-like in nature, the Escape stood out by more closely resembling a car, including its independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and unibody design. The first Escape had 33 or 63 cubic feet for cargo, depending on whether the seats were up. It used the same engine as the Focus, a 130-horsepower 2-liter with the option of a 200-horsepower 3-liter Duratec V6.
