Ford has updated the Escape's exterior for 2023. The SUV now sports fresh looks across the front bumper, and the grille is larger as well. You can also choose from several new wheel designs, too. On the inside, the infotainment is easily accessible via the Ford SYNC 4 system, and tech options include smartphone integration and navigation. If you want to optimize your next SUV for efficiency, consider the Escape PHEV, a plug-in hybrid variation.
The Ford Escape made its official debut as a 2001 model year. While most similar vehicles were truck-like in nature, the Escape stood out by more closely resembling a car, including its independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and unibody design. The first Escape had 33 or 63 cubic feet for cargo, depending on whether the seats were up. It used the same engine as the Focus, a 130-horsepower 2-liter with the option of a 200-horsepower 3-liter Duratec V6. All models were offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and had air conditioning, power accessories, remote keyless entry, a rear liftgate, a CD player, and more, with available features including cruise control and leather. The top-of-the-line Limited trim was added for 2003, and an Escape Hybrid joined the lineup for 2005.
The Escape entered its second generation for the 2008 model year with a range of interior updates. These included enhancements to the interior lighting system, instrument cluster, and center console, along with new seats made using eco-friendly materials. The exterior received new headlights and a new grille with redesigned wheel arches. The powertrains and transmission were updated for 2009, and Ford MyKey was added for 2010, designed for teen drivers.
